About Hurst Green

This pretty Lancastrian villages the setting for historic Stoneyhurst, a noted school which was founded in the 16th-century. The impressive building in beautiful grounds makes an idyllic back-drop for both the delicate and hardy blooms displayed at the local flower show.

Located on the banks of the River Ribble, the village has notable almshouses and a good village inn. Perhaps its most interesting feature is the attractive church dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist. The church was built in 1838, its decorative castellated tower is evocative of the romantic atmosphere of the first half of the 19th-century.

From here there are lovely scenic riverside walks taking you along delightful pathways to where the River Calder joins the waters of the Ribble at imposing Hacking Hall and to the confluence of the Hodder with the Ribble. With so many delightful waterways it is not surprising to learn that this is a great place for fishing, amongst others the Ribble has a bounty of dace, chub, roach, babel and perch making its picturesque banks a Mecca for the local fishing fraternity. About a mile and a half from Hurst Green the River Hodder is crossed by an ancient packhorse bridge of 16th-century origin. Of interest a short distance away, you can see the preserved keep of Clitheroe Castle which houses an important collection of fossils from surrounding Lancastrian districts.
